History of the Institute
The Institute (former Centre) of Medical Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences was founded on July 1st, 2003 based on the Decree No 26/03 of the Presidium of Polish Academy of Sciences, as a result of a merge of two biomedical research institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences located in Łódź, i.e.:
- Centre for Microbiology and Virology
- Department of Biogenic Amines
The activity of the Centre began on January 1st 2004. In 2007 the Centre gained rights to award doctor degrees in the field of medical sciences, namely medical biology. Another important change occurred in 2008 when the Centre was transformed into the Institute.
The Institute for Medical Biology has been active since April 29th 2008 based on the Decree 49/2007 of the Presidium of Polish Academy of Sciences.
SIGNIFICANT DATES IN THE HISTORY OF IMB PAS AND ITS PREDECESSORS
- 1959- establishment of the Faculty of Physiology PAS
- 1971- Faculty of Physiology PAS changes its name into Faculty of Biogenic Amines PAS and becomes a part of the Centre for Molecular and Macromolecular Research PAS in Lodz
- 1981- Department of Biogenic Amines becomes an independent institution
- 1987- – establishment of the Centre for Microbiology and Virology PAS
- 1994- the Centre moves to its present location which is at 106 Lodowa Street, Lodz
- 2004- Department of Biogenic Amines and Centre for Microbiology and Virology merge and from then on the institution is known as Centre for Medical Biology
- 2006- the Centre acquires first category in parametric estimation (conducted by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education) of research institutes in the category of medical sciences N9 with the highest relative rating of effectiveness: 6,3987
- 2007- CMB PAS gains rights to award doctor degrees in medical sciences, namely medical biology
- 2008- the Centre is transformed into the Institute for Medical Biology PAS and obtains a legal status
